It's that time of year that all of the children love: North Carolina Children's Book Award time. We have been busy reading this year's nominees to all of the children in Kindergarten through Second grade. It does take a bit of time to read and discuss the ten nominated books, but the children love these stories and information books. Follow this link for a list of all of the titles http://nccba.blogspot.com/2016/05/2016-2017-picture-book-and-junior-book.html. Third grade is finishing a unit on Internet Safety, Social Networking and Digital Citizenship. We have had many great discussions about what information should be kept private while on the internet. Students have also discussed the importance of responsible and clear digital communication. Fourth Graders have finished their Internet Safety unit and are now working on researching countries of the world. They are exploring information from CultureGrams and eBooks from Big Universe and NCWiseOwl. Finally, Fifth Grade culminated their Digital Citizenship unit with class presentations of the students' Digital Superhero comic strips. The students finished with a chorus of "Can we make more comic strips. Pleeeease!" Students are now listening to, and discussing, the new Newbery Award book, The Girl Who Drank the Moon. This award winner corresponds perfectly with the 5th grade unit on Fantasy.
